Vice Vs Well What Would You Expect?

Well, What Would You Expect?

(Some really great friends of mine came back from a trip to Paris, only to find one of their cats mauled by a coyote and the other rushed to the hospital with kidney failure. These cats have been members of the family since my friends got them in England and the dual deaths just wrecked them. I didn’t know what else to do, so as I do so many times I can’t find the words, I turn to verse. This is told from the perspective of the two cats, Wolsey and Henry, letting the family know that they were just fine. Having a ball, in fact. It’s a little rhymey but I think there’s some really nice imagery in here. It’s called “Well, What Would You Expect?” because, well what would you, they’re cats. They always get what they want.)

Cats can write letters in heaven, you know
Just as we’re writing to you
This place is fantastic for us, honestly
Not that we care but there’s a wonderful view

Finally we’re at rest and in a place that suits us
With cat gyms and gardens blooming with catnip
The angels come and sharpen our claws to a point
And give us gold bowls of milk that we sip

The whole place looks like Egypt, of course
But that shouldn’t really surprise
There we were treated as we should be, like royalty
Our elegance worn just like a disguise

There are shrines to us here, towering spires
Queens like Nefertiti stroke our soft fur
While we dine on fresh killed mice
Then we elongate and relax with a musical purr

This is the way the world should have been
We were practically slumming down there
In heaven we’re treated like Cleopatra
Everything is ours, we don’t have to share

Some day you’ll come and join us, you know
And for you, we’ll put in a good word
You’ll be our servants once more, just as you were
For cats are king in heaven, or haven’t you heard?

You’ll find Wolsey, sitting regally there in the sun
Guilelessly ignoring the slaves on the sand
But only the ones who want him beside them
He wants nothing to do with them, can’t they understand?

I’m here, of course, mewing at the kitchen counter
In the gold gilded pyramid I call my new home
I have all of the fresh shrimp I could ever want
Fresh from the sea, covered in a silver dome

Occasionally we can see hell from a TV screen
And watch the tortures befalling the sinners
It’s such a horrible place but we’re thrilled who’s there
In the afterlife the dogs lost and cats are the winners

We’re sure you miss us terribly, but how could you not?
We were fantastic and regal and perfect, a prize
And you were our servants, doing what we want
The apple human of our sleepy cat eyes

We’ll save you a place, for we miss you too
We always liked you, Jim, Maddie, and Max
I’d love to chat longer but I’ve got to go
Wolsey and me are now on the attack

A slow, stupid mouse is coming our way
They do this like clockwork all the day long
We toy with them then eat them up
A little cat sadism, is that really so wrong?

So it’s bye for now, as we wave from our throne
It’s time for our hourly worship service
Where all the humans come to bow down
Just as it should be, our version of bliss

We’re cats in egyptian heaven
Too happy to be missed
