Do You Tell Them About The Monster? (page 2)
She followed them to the front door and before she knew it, they were in their car and backing out of the driveway. She stood in the doorway until the Lexus was out of sight. Then she went back inside the house and locked the door.
On the wall, she noticed the alarm keypad and she groaned. That was another thing overlooked in the rush. But Nia’s real concern was that the Hammadis didn’t conduct any kind of introduction to the girls. She would have suggested it, but, again, everything was such a whirlwind. She knew nothing about these two children, other than their ages and names. She left the kitchen to see where they were hiding.
She quickly found the girls in the living room, sitting on the couch, staring at the large flat screen television, bathed in the white and blue ice light of Frozen.
“Hi there!” she said brightly. Both girls quickly spun their heads around. Nia came around in front of the couch and bent her knees, balancing on her toes. She looked first at the older girl. “You must be Madison.”
She was a pretty little girl and she favored Asian, taking after her mother. She had shoulder length black hair, a wide face, and a broad mouth with remarkably beautifully shaped lips. Her eyes looked at Nia with scrutiny, making her appear older—or at least smarter—than her eight years. She was dressed in a striped long-sleeved shirt, white capri pants, and was barefoot. Her sister was half Madison’s age, and favored Indian, looking more like her father. Her hair color was the same as her sister’s but short, and she wore a pink and black skirt with a white shirt that sported a sparkly pink heart on the chest. She was also shoeless. Before she could say anything, the little girl thrust her face forward and beamed an enormous smile revealing rows of tiny teeth.
“And that would make you Sadie.”
“That’s right,” said Sadie.
“I’m Nia. Is it okay if I hang out with you guys for awhile?”
“Sit here,” Sadie instructed as she wiggled her butt to the left so Nia would have space to sit down between them.
“Alright. Whatcha watchin’?”
“How long are you going to be here?” Madison asked, still scanning.
“I’m spending the night. Your parents are going to work late into the evening. They’ll probably be back tomorrow afternoon, but don’t totally count on that. They said they might have to work a little longer.”
“They told us,” Madison said.
“So it looks like it’s just us girls. Is this Frozen?”
“I was Elsa for Halloween,” Sadie volunteered.
“You were? What were you, Madison?”
“An ice cream cone.”
“An ice cream cone? That’s kinda cool. I bet that was an interesting costume. Did you have a cherry on top of your head?”
“How old are you?” Madison wanted to know.
Nia guessed the Halloween hat wear was going to remain a mystery.
“Do you have a boyfriend?”
“Yeah, do you have a boyfriend?” mimicked Sadie.
“What’s his name?” Madison asked.
“His name is Sebastian. But I call him Stan.”
“That’s just what he goes by. I think he thinks Sebastian sounds too formal. So everyone calls him by his nickname. Stan.”
“You’re pretty,” offered Sadie.
“Why thank you.”
“Is he taller than you?” Madison asked. “Cuz you’re tall.”
“He is a little taller than me, yes.”
“The boy should always be taller than the girl,” Madison proclaimed.
“That’s just the way it is.”
“Then I guess I pass.”
“Does he kiss you?”
“Yeah, does he kiss you?” echoed Sadie.
Nia nodded, now feeling a bit pressured. “He does.”
“Does he use his tongue?” Then Madison’s little pink tongue made an appearance and swirled around outside her mouth a bit. Nia laughed.
“Not like that he doesn’t.”
“Do you say Ew when they kiss in Frozen? I’m sure there’s a kiss between…”
“Anna,” Madison helped.
“Anna and Kristoff. They kiss, don’t they?”
“Yeah, but they don’t use their tongues.” And out came the tongue again, writhing like a short thick snake and slithering saliva all over her mouth. Then Sadie started doing her rendition of this move. Wanting to be able to give as good as she got, Nia followed suit, sticking out her tongue and wiggling it like they did, promptly repulsing them.
“Ooh, that’s gross!” Madison said.
“Yeah, that’s gross,” repeated Sadie.
“You both were doing it.”
“Yeah, but your tongue is so big and wet,” Madison noted. “I’m never going to use my tongue when I kiss.”
“There’s no rule that says you have to.”
